Why NAND and DRAM diverge inside one buy cycle

Why NAND and DRAM diverge inside one buy cycle
They share a vocabulary, a set of suppliers, and a spreadsheet tab. They do not share a clock. The 2026 cycle is the clearest demonstration in years.
Most procurement teams negotiate DRAM and NAND in the same quarterly rhythm, often with the same supplier reps. That is convenient, and it invites a mistake: reading one market's print as a proxy for the other. Here is what the public record says about how far apart they sit right now, and why.
Same direction, different slopes
Both markets rose hard in the first half of 2026. TrendForce's public 2Q26 outlook had conventional DRAM contract prices up 58β63% quarter-on-quarter and NAND up 7075%.1 By the 3Q26 outlook the ranking had flipped and both had decelerated: DRAM +1318%, NAND +10β15%, with NAND wafer increases expected to "moderate substantially."2
Supplier disclosures agree on the shape. Kioxia's June-quarter ASP rose roughly 70% sequentially while bit shipments grew in the low single digits, a price-led quarter almost by definition.3 SanDisk attributed about two-thirds of its sequential revenue growth to pricing and one-third to volume.4 SK hynix's NAND share of revenue rose from 21% to 27% in a single quarter on the strength of pricing.5
Then the spot boards separated. Mid-September NAND wafer spot is drifting slightly lower week over week, with suppliers loosening quotes and buyers "on the fence," while DRAM spot is still propped up by firm supplier quotes even as DDR5 inquiries slow.6[^spot0902]
Five reasons the clocks differ
1. HBM pulls DRAM wafers. Nothing equivalent pulls NAND wafers. The AI build-out consumes DRAM twice: HBM on the accelerator and RDIMM in the server. HBM uses roughly three times the wafer supply of DDR5 per bit, which is what shrinks the commodity DRAM pool.[^ratio] AI's NAND demand shows up as enterprise SSD, which is the same NAND bits in a different enclosure. That is a mix shift, not a wafer penalty, so NAND supply does not shrink the way conventional DRAM supply does.
2. Different supplier rosters. Conventional DRAM is effectively three suppliers. NAND has five-plus meaningful sources (Samsung, SK hynix with Solidigm, Kioxia with SanDisk, Micron, YMTC). More sellers means more places for spot to find a lower ask when demand pauses, which is what the September wafer prints show.6
3. NAND's inventory cycle is the client SSD channel. TrendForce noted PC OEMs built client SSD inventory aggressively in the first half, which has "significantly reduced buyers' willingness to accept another round of price increases."2 DRAM buyers had no such cushion; DDR4 is on extended, server-first life support and DDR5 is on allocation.[^ddr4]
4. NAND's LTA coverage is being built now; DRAM's is already in place. Kioxia is targeting 50% LTA coverage by calendar 2028; SanDisk has ten long-term "New Business Model" agreements; Micron's strategic agreements cover roughly one-third of its NAND bits versus about a fifth of DRAM.34[^mu] The public NAND contract print still describes most of the market. The public DRAM print increasingly describes the residual.
5. DRAM is a NAND input. Enterprise SSDs carry DRAM cache. TrendForce's 3Q26 outlook flagged continued eSSD price increases partly because of DRAM supply constraints for small-capacity models.2 When your SSD quote moves, check whether it is the NAND or the DRAM inside it that moved.
What this means for a buy cycle
DRAM: negotiate for allocation first, price second. Ask about LTA participation, generation roadmap (DDR4 EOL exposure), and whether your supplier's HBM ramp changes your priority. The spot print tells you about channel fatigue, not about your allocation.
NAND: negotiate for timing. Spot is softening at the margin and client SSD inventories are elevated; data center demand is the floor, and suppliers say it holds through 2027.[^kio][^sam] A quarter's patience may be worth something here in a way it is not in DRAM.
Separate the note to leadership the same way: two direction calls, two confidence levels, two sets of falsifiers. "Memory is up X%" is the single most misleading sentence a buyer can write this year.
Takeaway
DRAM is a supply problem with a price attached. NAND, right now, is a price problem with supply still available. Negotiate them on different clocks, and write them up on different lines.
